Hello my beautiful readers!
The new year has begun and I am pumped to get going. I'm excited for all the things that I want to accomplish and all the surprises this year has in store.
Today I wanted to talk about my job. For a little context, I work for the Athletics Department of my university. I actually really enjoy my job and have had some pretty stressful, yet amazing experiences. I'm fortunate to work with a really great group of people as well.
I began working this position because one of my friends was kind enough to recommend me to her supervisor. The interview process was pretty simple and the organization in terms of schedules and who can work when goes pretty smoothly as well. All my supervisors are super chill and understanding. Again, very fortunate to work with the people I get to work with.
Now for what we do. So my job is to set up, work at, and clean up at various sporting events depending on the season. I started the year working soccer and volleyball.
Soccer seems all fun and games until setting up consists of setting up the goal posts, benches, etc. These things are heavy and the field feels especially endless when you have to walk these items up and down it. These games usually take the longest and yes the hours are great in terms of getting payed, but man, I always feel exhausted afterwards. The worst is when it's rainy and cold and you're just on the field looking like a mess for a long time. Anyways, let's get into the experience.
Soccer Experience: There was one game I was working where my position was at my favorite spot in the corner where I just wanted to sit and eat my popcorn and drink my cider. This day, as in all days, the team warms up on this side of the field, which is fine. Well it was fine until my popcorn got kicked over my a soccer ball 3 different times. I gave up eating it after that, but in my head I was like seriously. Of all the things you had to kick my popcorn. Not only that, but we're required to chase any soccer balls that get kicked out of the field. These soccer balls are 200 a pop so basically we're not allowed to lose them. This same game the ball got kicked out into the street twice and I had to run out and find them.
Volleyball is probably the easiest game to work at because there's not much to set up or clean up and during the game we just roll balls back and forth. I didn't work too many of these games to have had any good or bad experience so we'll leave that as is.
Finally, saved the best for last. You guys already know I love basketball so the fact that my job at basketball games is usually to set up, greet people at the entrance and watch the game is so freaking cool. I've met really cool coworkers at these games and very sweet security guards who I make conversation with when there's nothing else to do. The only parts that can suck out this is that when there's no security sometimes we get placed at the back doors where there is nothing to watch or do so it's a bit boring. No complaints though because I get paid for it. The other thing is because we stand so long, my knees get really agitated so I have to keep stretching them and switching the type of position I stand in.
Experience: Obviously the best part of these games is being able to watch the games themselves. Another part I enjoy is that because we get there early to set up you get to watch the players warm up while some really interesting basketball type music is blaring out of the speakers. I've worked so many games that it's kind of relaxing to watch our team and the opposing team warm up. My favorite day as of recently was Kids Day where all of these little kids up until the age of middle school came to watch the game. Let's just say I couldn't stop smiling the whole time I was working.
Let me know if you want more in depth stories of my working experience or anything else you guys would like to read about. Until next week!
Stay young, stay beautiful, and keep on hustling.
